Dal fry is and Indian dish made with soft moong dal, spices and herbs. This dish is famous in homes as well as restaurants. It is a great comfort food and can be made quickly with easily available ingredients. Serve this recipe along with kulcha, naan, jeera rice or plain rice, it goes well with almost everything. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS:
For the dal:
- Moong dal- 1 cup (washed and soaked)
- Oil- 1 tbsp
- Jeera- 1/2 tsp
- Saunf- 1/4 tsp
- Bay leaf- 2 nos
- Garlic- 7-8 cloves (chopped)
- Onion- 2 nos (finely chopped)
- Tomatoes- 3-4 nos (finely chopped)
- Salt- to taste
- Red chilli powder- 1 tsp
- Kasuri methi- 1 tsp (crushed)
- Jeera powder- 1 tsp
- Sabzi Masala- 1 tsp
- Mint powder- 1 tsp
- Chopped coriander leaves- 2 tbsp
For The Tadka:
- Ghee- 1 tbsp
- Dry red chillies- 2-3 nos
PROCEDURE:
- Add soaked and drained dal to a pressure cooker, add water to it. Cover it and let it cook for 2-3 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally.
- Set the dal aside.
- Heat oil in a kadhai, add jeera, saunf and tej patta to it and let it crackle.
- Now add chopped garlic and saute for a min.
- Now add chopped onions and cook until translucent. This step usually takes 3-4 minutes
. - Add chopped tomatoes along with some salt and cook well until mushy.
- Now add the cooked dal and mix well.
- Add 1 cup of water to it, add all the powdered spices and mix well.
- Allow it to come to a boil and later simmer it for 5-10 mins.
- Add chopped coriander leaves to it and switch off the flame.
- Heat up a pan and add ghee to it, now add red chillies to it and let it puff up.
- Pour the tadka on the dal and cover it immediately. Let it absorb the flavours for at-least 5 mins.
- Restaurant-style Dal Fry is ready, Serve hot with Matar Pulao
