CABBAGE PORIYAL

 

A good side dish to serve when you are in a mood to serve 2 or 3 side dishes with dal. Quick to prepare and tasty to savour. Not to mention the goodness of vitamin C, doses of fiber, folate, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A and K.

 


INGREDIENTS:

*Cabbage- 1 (medium sized, shredded)

*Onions- 2 (medium sized, chopped)

*Gram dal- 2 tsp

*Cooking oil- 1 tbsp

*Grated coconut- 2 tbsp

*Mustard seeds- ½ tsp

*Salt- to taste

*Whole red chilies- 5-6 (deseeded and broken into pieces)

*Turmeric powder- ¼ tsp

*Coriander leaves- 2 tbsp (chopped)

 


PROCEDURE:

*Take one cup of water and add washed gram dal to it.

*Pressure cook for 2 whistles.

*After the pressure is released, add the washed cabbage to the cooked gram dal and cook for 1 whistle.

*Remove the whistle immediately and drain in a colander.

*Heat oil in a kadhai, crackle mustard seeds, add curry leaves and allow to splutter.

*Add onion and salt.

*Saute till onions turn soft.

*Add red chilies and saute well.

*Now add boiled cabbage and mix well.

*Add turmeric powder and mix again.

*Cook on high flame till excess water evaporates and the poriyal is dry.

*Switch off the flame, add grated coconut and coriander leaves.

*Give it a good mix.

*Serve hot with hot rice, ghee and dal.
